Most people associate good health with physical exercise and healthy eating habits. But did you know that your oral health can affect your overall health too?
We can all argue that good health is extremely valuable in life, yet oral health is often overlooked. Over the last decade, abundant research has shown numerous links between oral bacteria and various health conditions. Heart disease, diabetes, and pre-term childbirth are some examples just to name a few. Since these bacteria cling to your teeth and gums, daily brushing and flossing can improve your overall health. In addition, many systemic health issues show up in the mouth and can be detected first by your dentist. During a dental exam, your dentist not only looks at your teeth, but your cheeks, gums and tongue for any abnormalities. So not only is it important to get regular cleanings to keep your smile beautiful, but also to maintain your overall health.
