Hockey Season Returns!
With a new NHL season well underway, we would like to dedicate this blog entry to all the hockey players out there, especially Centro Dental’s ice hockey team, Centro Hellfish!
Unfortunately, we see a high incidence of broken front teeth due to high-impact sports. Recently, our long-time patient presented to our Richmond, BC office with a broken upper incisor after receiving a high-stick while not wearing a mouthguard. Many hockey players believe they don’t need a mouthguard because they wear a full cage. Mouthguards offer protection from impact under the jaw which can cause concussions and tongue biting which cages do not.
Fortunately for him, the fracture did not involve the nerve of the tooth so Dr. Liang was able to restore the tooth with a tooth-coloured filling. If the fracture had involved the nerve of the tooth or occurred through the root, more complex treatment would be required or worse yet, tooth loss.
Protection is essential when playing any high-impact sport, whether it’s hockey, basketball or lacrosse. More and more professional athletes can now be seen wearing mouthguards. At Centro Dental, we offer high-performance Under Armour® mouthguards to give our athletes the best protection for their teeth. Under Armour® mouthguards, worn by athletes such as GSP, David Ortiz, Marian Gaborik, Adrian Peterson and Lindsey Vonn, will ensure that you don’t end up like this:
Talk to one of our dentists at your next visit if you think you may need a mouthguard.
Thanks for reading and we wish both Centro Hellfish and the Canucks a great season!
